'It's Terrible...not right' - Exclusive: McAvennie rages at what Uefa have done to Celtic

Frank McAvennie has ridiculed UEFA for making Celtic play Champions League qualifiers after winning the Scottish Premiership.

The former Hoops striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, was also concerned about the notion of one-legged European qualifiers this summer which he described as “dangerous” for Neil Lennon’s side.

The Champions League qualifiers will be a one-off fixture this year, rather than one home and away leg, as the football calendar readjusts amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Lennon believes that UEFA have came to the correct decision and suggests that home advantage is redundant without fans anyway.

McAvennie insisted that the Scottish Premiership champions should not have to play qualifers.

“Regardless of whether they are home or away, Lenny will have them ready,” he told Football Insider.

“Over two legs Celtic should beat the so called lesser teams but anyone in football will tell you that in a one-off match anyone can win.

“If they go away and they are not up for it you can rectify it when they come back to Celtic Park so that would be a bit dangerous. Anything can happen so it is risky.

“But I just think it is terrible that a team who wins the league in Scotland should be playing that many qualifiers. It is not right. It really is not.

“We got to the group stage one year and had to play five qualifiers!”

Lennon, when speaking on European qualification, said: “It’s like everything at the moment – you need to adapt.

“But UEFA have come to a decision and it’s probably the right one in trying to condense it all.”
