Exclusive: West Ham legend tears Moyes to pieces
Frank McAvennie has urged David Moyes to cut out the excuses and admit that West Ham have not been good enough upon their Premier League return.
The former Upton Park striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested that the Hammers manager has been deflecting the blame for what were were ultimately poor performances against Wolves and Spurs.
Moyes claimed Adama Traore was “the difference” on Saturday after the winger came off the bench to inspire Wolves to a 2-0 victory at the London Stadium.
Last night, the former Manchester United and Everton manager was incensed that Tomas Soucek’s own goal, which have Tottenham the lead, was not ruled out by VAR after the corner deflected off Davinson Sanchez’s arm.
Harry Kane added a second for Jose Mourinho’s side late on and McAvennie was suggested poor defending was to blame for both losses.
“David, do not jump on that and blame the loss on that refereeing decision,” he told Football Insider.
“It was like when he said Traore was the difference at the weekend but West Ham were awful.
“They gave Traore far too much space. Get tight to him! It is just basics. Do not let him run at you.
“He blamed Traore, he blamed VAR last night – that is not the West Ham team that I know.
“They have not been playing well. Don’t make excuses.”
Moyes, speaking about the handball, told Sky Sports: “For them not to give that tonight? I can’t believe it. I can’t believe it.
“I thought that every ball that hit an arm and led to a goal was to be chalked off.”
