'I totally agree with David' - Exclusive: McAvennie reacts to West Ham defeat to Spurs
Frank McAvennie was baffled by the decision not to disallow Tottenham’s first goal as West Ham slipped to defeat again on Tuesday night.
The former Hammers and Celtic striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, was adamant that the Video Assistant Referee should have intervened and disallowed Tomas Soucek‘s own goal.
David Moyes’s side were level at the break but just after the hour mark the deadlock was broken.
A Giovani Lo Celso corner deflected off Davinson Sanchez and ricocheted off the inside of Soucek’s leg into the bottom right hand corner of Lukasz Fabianski’s net.
However, the ball deflected off Sanchez’s arm but despite VAR in operation at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the goal was not overturned.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the incident, McAvennie said: “I totally agree with David, it should have been disallowed.
“I am not a big fan of VAR. The bottom line is, by the letter of the law, it is a hand ball.
“It deflects off his arm and made the path of the ball different. That is the way they want to do it.
“I think it would have been soft if the referee had given it but with VAR you have got to give it.
“But I do not think it would have affected the result. Spurs would still have beaten West Ham.”
Moyes said: “I can’t believe they’ve ruled that as a goal.
Whoever it was on VAR tonight, didn’t do his job right because he didn’t abide by the rules we were told we are supposed to play to.”
