'I never want to see him again...' - Exclusive: McAvennie savages West Ham signing blunder
Frank McAvennie has ripped into the West Ham recruitment blunder that saw them shell out a club-record fee for a striker who can’t play up front on his own.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Hammer savaged Sebastien Haller and claimed he is incapable of playing as a lone centre-forward.
McAvennie claimed he “never ever again” wants to see the 26-year-old spearhead the attack on his own in a Premier League match.
Haller missed the restart over the weekend due to a hip injury that kept him out of Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Wolves.
Michail Antonio led the West Ham line in the absence of the man signed for an initial £36million last summer from Frankfurt.
“Haller is a far better player when Antonio is up there with him,” McAvennie told Football Insider. “I never ever want to see Haller again playing up front on his own. He cannot play up there on his own.
“Haller played in a front three in Germany and then he comes here and he is playing on his own – and he can’t.
“Antonio went up beside him and when he has, Haller is a better player. Whoever scouted the boy did not do it right. If they want him to play up there on his own, that is not the player that he is.”
Haller’s debut campaign has yielded seven goals from 27 Premier League matches, 24 of which have come in the starting XI.
David Moyes’ side are back in action tomorrow when they travel to Spurs, who drew 1-1 against Man United on Friday night.
West Ham are stuck on 27 points but remain 17th in the table as Bournemouth, one place below them, lost 2-0 to Crystal Palace at the weekend.
