'I left at half-time, it was Horrible, terrible' - Exclusive: McAvennie reveals West Ham agony
Frank McAvennie has revealed he was so upset by the West Ham display in their last match against next opponents Tottenham he left at half-time and headed for the bar.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Hammer opened up on the despair he felt watching his old team’s derby defeat back in November.
In what was Jose Mourinho’s first match as Tottenham manager, they were 2-0 up at the London Stadium at half-time through goals from Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura.
Harry Kane added a third shortly after the break but McAvennie had given up the ghost long before late goals from substitute Michail Antonio and Angelo Ogbonna gave the final scoreline a flattering look for West Ham.
It provides a dispiriting memory for McAvennie ahead of the Irons’ bid to avoid relegation, which suffered another major blow with their 2-0 home defeat to Wolves yesterday.
“I went down to watch the Tottenham match earlier in the season and I left at half time,” the former striker told Football Insider. “I went and sat down at the bar. It was horrible. Terrible.
“There was no fight, no hunger, nothing. I do not like to see that from a team.
“That is a massive concern and is why they’re hanging over the bottom three. Hopefully David [Moyes] can get it sorted and get a team on that pitch that wants to play.
“The fans are brilliant down there. They are great.”
David Moyes’ side are back in action when they travel to Spurs, who drew 1-1 against Man United on Friday night, for the reverse fixture next Tuesday.
West Ham are stuck on 27 points but remain 17th in the table as Bournemouth, one place below them, lost 2-0 to Crystal Palace yesterday.
