Exclusive: McAllister pal claims Dubai partying & fights led to Rangers meltdown

The Rangers post winter break meltdown was caused by partying in Dubai, infighting and players getting too big for their boots.

That is according to Celtic legend Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the calamitous Gers results that paved the way for his former club to gallop to a ninth consecutive title.

Celtic were crowned champions last month after the 12 clubs in the division agreed that it would not be possible to complete the 2019-20 campaign amid the coronavirus crisis.

Rangers were two points behind Celtic with a game in hand going into the winter break after a memorable 2-1 win at Parkhead at the end of December.

There has been much speculation as to where it all went wrong for Steven Gerrard’s side, who were 13 points adrift when the campaign was called.

“Stevie Gerrard and Gary Mac, who I know well, they are great football guys,” McAvennie told Football Insider.

“Rangers put down a big marker before the winter break but they went to Dubai and instead of working hard I think they went there and partied! Which is not a bad
thing.

“There were rumours that there were arguments on the trip. The momentum was with Rangers going into the winter break and that will have hurt Celtic.

“Some of the players got above themselves. I saw them saying they are not scared of Celtic anymore and all of that kind of stuff. If I was the manager I would say, ‘Just shut up.’ Go and do it on the park.

“Do not tell people how good you are when you are not. They thought they had won the league at Christmas. All of the papers came out and made them favourites.

“You only have to look at Celtic. They have been over the ground so many times and these Rangers boys have not.”
