'I'll be first on the phone' - Exclusive: McAvennie drops promotion vow Leeds fans will love

Frank McAvennie has revealed he would be “delighted” if Leeds United get promoted this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Celtic and West Ham striker is convinced the Whites are heading back to the Premier League after 16 years.

He hailed United as a “massive club” that the “Premier League have missed” and is looking forward to phoning his long-time pal Eddie Gray if and when promotion is sealed.

Leeds restart their Championship campaign on Sunday with an away trip to Cardiff City as they look to continue a five-match winning streak before the lockdown in early March.

“Leeds should get promoted,” McAvennie told Football Insider. “Leeds and West Brom have been the best all season, they have dominated.

“Leeds would be a great addition to the Premier League. They are a massive club. I am very good friends with Eddie Gray – football royalty.

“If they go up I would be delighted because Eddie is getting on a little bit. He would be the proudest man in England if they go up, I will tell you that.

“He loves Leeds and I will be the first on the phone to him. The Premier League have missed Leeds.”

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are top of the Championship and seven points clear of third-placed Fulham with nine matches remaining.

They will be very confident of going up automatically if they can take all three points against bogey team Cardiff and then defeat Fulham in the next game.

In other Leeds United news, Danny Mills claims Bielsa has a “phenomenal” ball-playing talent in the ranks who won’t be in Sunday’s XI.
