'I can tell you that for sure' - Exclusive: Gerrard tipped for his final season at Rangers
Steven Gerrard will not be manager of Rangers in a year’s time if the club’s trophy drought continues.
That is according to Celtic legend Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the man charged with stopping 10-in-a-row.
Gerrard is set to lead Rangers into a third season as he looks to build upon the improvements made in his first two campaigns.
The Ibrox giants have made progress, especially in Europe and they are still in the last-16 of the Europa League that is now set to finish in August.
“Stevie Gerrard has done well with Rangers but I think he will move if they do not win anything this year,” McAvennie told Football Insider. “He has got a big enough name and reputation to get a job in England but he will not get the Liverpool job if he has not won anything, I can tell you that for sure.
“Unless Gerrard wins something it will not happen. If he was managing Hearts or Hibs
and he came second they would have a street party. But it means nothing to Rangers or Celtic.
“You will not be remembered unless you are a winner in Scotland. He might go down to the
Championship and do what Frank Lampard has done.
“Stevie is learning his trade, lets be brutally honest about it.
“Rangers is a big club so he has pass marks from me but he will not get an A until he has won something.”
Gerrard was appointed in May 2018 and has yet to win a trophy since taking charge with Celtic continuing to sweep up all the domestic honours.
Nevertheless, the Liverpool icon and his backroom staff were handed new five-year contracts last December for overseeing an upturn in results.
