The Rangers fanbase was divided by Philippe Clement’s decision to haul Todd Cantwell off at half-time in Sunday’s Scottish League Cup win against Hearts.
The Gers progressed into the final of the competition with an emphatic 3-1 victory at Hampden Park, but the Englishman was replaced by Scott Wright for the second half.
Cantwell found himself in the referee’s book after a 29th-minute challenge in the semi-final, but Rangers fans were bemused as to why he was removed from the action.
The 25-year-old is seen as one of the club’s best and most creative players but is yet to get his first goal of the season after 12 appearances.
His replacement went on to score the game’s second goal, with captain James Tavenier scoring a penalty before and a free kick after in a huge win for Clement.
The Belgian’s decision has split the opinion of Rangers fans, who have taken to social media to discuss the incident.
One fan concluded that Clement’s decision must have been unrelated to his performance as “any football man with a functioning set of eyes” would not have taken Cantwell off.
One fan speculated that Cantwell may already be in Clement’s bad books.
This supporter agreed with Clement’s decision, claiming that leaving Cantwell on would only end one way.
