Kieran Maguire shares Man City reveal as £68m deal threatened

Man City will be ‘relaxed’ about the possibility of the Premier League introducing stricter rules on party-related deals.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that City are now in a position where they don’t have to rely on party-related deals.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Premier League clubs are set to vote on whether to introduce tougher rules on related-party commercial deals this month.

The vote could have serious implications at Newcastle United, who have signed commercial deals with multiple Saudi Arabia-based companies since their takeover.

However, the outcome of the vote could also affect City and their lucrative commercial agreement with Etihad – who have ties to City’s ownership group.

As reported by The Athletic, City earn a figure upwards of £67.5 million per year from their Etihad deal.

If the vote passes, Premier League clubs will have to prove they had offers of similar value if they strike a deal with a related party.

Maguire believes City will not feel threatened by any new restrictions as their success on the pitch will help to attract sponsors.

I think if these rules had been introduced 12 or 14 years ago, Manchester City would have found it very challenging,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

They would have struggled to generate the extent of the revenue that they presently get from Etihad and similar parties.

Today, their Etihad deal looks relatively modest and is certainly not excessive by the standards of a club that has won the Premier League in four years out of the last five and is the current Champions League holders.

“If you put those stats in front of any potential front-of-shirt sponsor, commercial partner or naming rights partner, then they’re going to want to be a part of it.

So as far as the impact on Manchester City is concerned, the club has very much broadened its sponsor base and I think it will be relatively relaxed.
