Kieran Maguire slams Everton board after Dele Alli twist - 'Spurs wouldn't do it'
It is ‘naive’ of the Everton board to try and renegotiate the terms of Dele Alli’s contract with Tottenham.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that he believes the Toffees signed Alli out of ‘desperation’.
As per the Daily Mail, Everton have opened talks with Spurs over the possibility of renegotiating an appearance clause in Alli’s contract.
As part of Alli’s move to Goodison Park, Spurs were set to receive £10million after he made 20 appearances for the Toffees.
Alli is seven appearances away from reaching that milestone, but Everton are wary of playing the former England international because of their financial issues.
As a result, Alli has been left out of Sean Dyche’s plans at Goodison Park after returning from an underwhelming loan spell at Turkish side Besiktas.
Maguire believes it is ‘very strange’ of Everton to try and restructure Alli’s contract.
“Contracts are contracts,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“This does seem a very strange approach by the Everton hierarchy.
“If Dele Alli had put in some stellar performances with plenty of goals and assists you wouldn’t have seen Spurs wanting to return to the negotiating table to try and increase the fee.
“So I think it shows a degree of naivety.
“Dele Alli has been open and honest with regards to the challenges he’s facing in his life and the impact that it’s had.
“It’s very unfortunate that it has coincided with his transfer to Everton.
“But I think at the senior level at Everton, just like when it comes to buying or selling a company, you do your due diligence and Dele Alli’s problems were evident towards the latter stages of his career at Spurs.
“It therefore suggests that the signing was one of desperation at the time, and you never, never buy in desperation.“
