Kieran Maguire: Leeds United set for 'huge bonus' as new Elland Road details emerge

Leeds United will benefit both on and off the pitch from their impressive attendance levels at Elland Road this season.

That is the opinion of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that matchday revenue is more important for Championship clubs compared to the Premier League.

Despite their relegation to the Championship, Leeds fans have continued to support their side in huge numbers this season.

According to Transfermarkt‘s attendance figures, only Sunderland have had a higher average attendance than Leeds in the Championship.

Elland Road has a capacity of 37,890, and Leeds boast an average attendance of 35,338 in league fixtures in 2023/24.

Leeds recorded matchday revenue of £24million in their 2021/22 accounts while in the Premier League, and figures similar to that will have a huge financial benefit to the club in the Championship.

Maguire explained that matchday income accounts for around a fifth of Championship teams’ overall revenue.

What we do see in the Championship is that clubs in general earn a higher proportion of their revenues from matchday receipts than they do in the Premier League,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

In the Premier League, it can be as low as 3.8 percent of money coming in through matchday.

In contrast, in the Championship overall it averages at 20 percent.

That includes, of course, those clubs that are beneficiaries of parachute payments.

“Therefore, having a packed-out Elland Road makes a significant difference in terms of allowing the club to be competitive.

Secondly, it helps to generate the atmosphere which can only assist the players as they try to make the fans proud of them.

“So there are benefits both on and off the pitch.

But in an increasingly challenging financial environment, having a sold-out Elland Road for each match is a huge bonus to the club.
