'Super unacceptable coming from you - Fans can't believe Carragher's instant reaction to Rashford red card for Man United in 4-3 defeat to Copenhagen

Man United fans thanked Jamie Carragher for his instant reaction to Marcus Rashford’s red card in Wednesday’s 4-3 Champions League defeat to FC Copenhagen.

But supporters of other clubs pointed out that the high-profile pundit was being inconsistent with his opinions as the big talking point of the night was another VAR controversy.

On a chaotic night in Copenhagen there were seven goals, two penalties, a protestor on the pitch and a late winner by a 17-year-old substitute as well as the red card for Rashford.

In a week that has seen video technology in the headlines because of its use in Monday’s madness at Tottenham, it came to fore to make key decisions in Denmark as Man United slipped to a damaging Champions League defeat.

United manager Erik ten Hag felt its use to dismiss Rashford for planting his foot on the ankle of Elias Jelert “changed the game”. At the time, with just 42 minutes of the match played, the visitors led 2-0.

Referee Donatas Rumsas would be called to the pitchside monitor twice more in the game, to award a penalty to each side for handball.

United have now lost nine times in 17 matches and are reeling from another chastening defeat which leaves them facing a huge task to qualify for the last 16.

Carragher’s instant reaction to Rashford’s dismissal was that “no way is that a red card” as he pointed out how the slow-motion replays and still images distort the severity of the action.

Supporters of other clubs, many of them Arsenal fans, not unpredictably suggested in no uncertain terms that the VAR officials were simply following the rules, and that Rashford deserved to get his marching orders.
