Sources: Eric Dier wants to quit Tottenham after contract talks collapse

Eric Dier wants to leave Tottenham as a free agent rather than quit in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed talks over a new contract have collapsed – with the 30-year-old’s current deal set to come to an end when the 2023-24 campaign concludes.

Dier has not had a single minute of action so far this season and has failed to even make the matchday squad for more than half of their games this term.

Tottenham would be keen to listen to offers for the former England international in January as they look to clear the decks under Ange Postecoglou.

But Dier is instead looking towards next summer as he expects to have more options and offers as a free agent.

The ex-Sporting CP star earns a reported wage of £85,000-a-week on the contract he signed back in July 2020.

He has been on the bench for Spurs’ last three Premier League games but is yet to be called upon by Postecoglou.

The Australian chose to improve his defence with one of the first acts of his tenure in north London, signing Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg.

Van de Ven has proven a revelation alongside World Cup winner Cristian Romero at the heart of the Tottenham rearguard.

It is believed Postecoglou is keen to improve his defence even further in the winter window, but one player he won’t be pursuing is Galatasaray’s Victor Nelsson.

Football Insider revealed on Thursday (2 November) that Spurs have no interest in signing the Denmark international in January – despite his £26million release clause.

Dier has turned out 361 times across all competitions for Tottenham since joining in 2014 but is yet to win a trophy with the club.
