Sources: Bristol City set sights on ex-Millwall boss Gary Rowett after Derby County twist

Ex-Millwall manager Gary Rowett is being targeted by Bristol City for their managerial vacancy, sources have told Football Insider.

Former Birmingham City boss John Eustace is currently the bookies’ favourite to land the job following his departure from St Andrew’s last month.

But as revealed by Football Insider on Wednesday (1 November), Eustace is also in the frame for Derby County – should they sack under-fire boss Paul Warne.

Rowett is regarded by Bristol City as a leading candidate given his Championship experience and availability.

He left Millwall by mutual consent in mid-October after four years at the helm in south London.

Speaking in a statement upon his departure, the 49-year-old insisted “the time just feels right to part ways”.

Rowett won 76 of his 196 games in charge of the Lions and recorded three top-half Championship finishes.

He is vastly experienced in the second tier, having also taken charge at Birmingham and Derby – reaching the playoffs with the latter in the 2017-18 campaign.

The ex-defender also managed Burton Albion between 2012 and 2014.

Bristol City are on the search for a new manager after two-and-a-half years in charge for Nigel Pearson at Ashton Gate.

Pearson was sacked on Sunday (29 October) following the Robins’ 2-0 defeat against rivals Cardiff which leaves them 15th in the table.

The 60-year-old won just 42 of his 131 matches in charge of the club.

Bristol City are next in action against lowly Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday (4 November).

They will be managed by interim head coach Curtis Fleming, who will be flanked by Ali Hines and Kalifa Cisse.
