Sources: Chelsea star Ian Maatsen will jump at the chance to complete Man City move

Chelsea ace Ian Maatsen would be “very keen” to join reported suitors Man City if they were to launch a move for his signature, sources have told Football Insider.

The treble-winners have been widely linked with a potential move for the 21-year-old, who is currently out of favour at Stamford Bridge despite impressing Mauricio Pochettino in pre-season.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (21 November) that Chelsea still plan to offer Maatsen a long-term new contract despite his recent struggles for playing time.

He has recently seen his deal extended until June 2025 after the club activated a 12-month clause in his current agreement.

But a well-placed source has told Football Insider that Maatsen wants to play first-team football more regularly.

He has recently spoken out about “keeping his options open” and hinted at having to make a “difficult decision” in the near future if his lack of action continues.

The Netherlands Under-21 international has made just two starts in nine total appearances this season.

That is despite the youngster impressing Pochettino during pre-season and catching the eye with performances at left-back, on the wing and in a playmaker role.

Maatsen enjoyed a successful loan at Burnley last season as they were promoted back to the Premier League, notching four goals and six assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.

The Clarets tried to sign the defender permanently on transfer deadline day but were rebuffed by the 21-year-old – who wanted to fight for his Chelsea place.

Marc Cucurella’s resurgence at left-back has prevented Maatsen from playing a bigger role – while the good form of Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer has limited his options higher up the pitch.
