Tottenham agree £4.3million deal to sign Cologne defender Kevin Wimmer

By Tottenham correspondent Tony Hughes
Tottenham have agreed a deal in principle to sign defender Kevin Wimmer from Cologne for £4.3million, Football Insider sources understand.

The 22-year-old Austrian will complete a transfer to White Hart Lane in the summer.
Spurs have agreed a €6m (£4.3m) fee with the Bundesliga club and the player has settled the terms of a four-year contract.
Tottenham have prioritised the signing of a centre-back who has his best years ahead of him and made their move for Wimmer after being impressed by his performances for Cologne this season.
He has started 24 of the German club’s 25 Bundesliga matches and fits the profile of the type of player the London club want to sign in that he is young, hungry and has the potential to improve.
Spurs made enquiries for Wimmer in January but did not pursue a deal as they were unable to offload either of their unwanted senior centre-backs Younes Kaboul or Vlad Chiriches, who were both made available for loan ahead of the January window’s deadline.
Kaboul and Chiriches are both set to be transfer listed by Tottenham again this summer, with Wimmer ready to fight Jan Vertonghen, Eric Dier and Federico Fazio for a regular starting position next season.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino admitted this week that every member of his squad still has the chance to meet the club’s standards, but he also confirmed Spurs have begun identifying their summer transfer targets.
“The players need to feel they always have the opportunity to show us that they can stay here and I am always open. It is never too late,” he said.
“But we are starting to work on strengthening the team. My idea is to improve every season. That is what we are working very hard to do and identify where we can do that, to make our squad better for next year.”
