'Let's not kid ourselves' - Pundit drops intriguing Newcastle claim

Newcastle United have “every opportunity” to win the League Cup this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Aston Villa and Tottenham defender Alan Hutton has been impressed by the Magpies after their 3-0 victory over Manchester United on Wednesday (1 November) to progress to the quarter-finals.

Goals from Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall and Joe Willock saw Newcastle beat Erik ten Hag’s struggling side.

Eddie Howe’s side lost 2-0 to Man United in the final of this competition last season but will face an inconsistent Chelsea side in the next round.

Hutton claims Newcastle will “fancy themselves” to win the trophy, which would be their first major honour since 1955.

“Absolutely. I think all the teams that are left [in the League Cup] will be looking that way,” he told Football Insider.

“It’s an opportunity. Manchester City aren’t in it, so there’s every opportunity to go and do something.

“Newcastle, of course, they’ve been on the cusp of doing something special. I know they obviously made the Champions League, but I’m talking about actually winning a trophy.

“Of course, they’ll fancy themselves. Let’s not kid ourselves, it’s a poor Manchester United team at the moment, but they still went to Old Trafford and won comfortably.

“Obviously people will be looking at that and thinking it’s an opportunity.

“Big hurdle getting over Chelsea, but the way they’re playing at the moment is a bit up and down – you don’t know what you’re going to get.

“I think Newcastle will fancy their chances, not only beating Chelsea but going all the way.”
