Rangers told to appoint 'next Steven Gerrard' after talks reveal - expert

Frank Lampard could be the “next Steven Gerrard” if he takes over as Rangers manager.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Gers defender Alan Hutton suggested Lampard would be an “interesting” choice but could be a similar manager to Gerrard.

Gerrard, now manager of Saudi Arabian side Al Ettifaq, was in charge of the Light Blues between 2018 and 2021 and led the Scottish club to the first league title since their return to the top flight.

The Liverpool legend eventually left to take over at Aston Villa before being relieved of his duties less than a year later.

Lampard is currently without a club after his most recent stint in charge of Chelsea as caretaker manager.

The 45-year-old was permanent boss of the Blues back in 2019 and spent a year and a half at Stamford Bridge before he was sacked after a string of poor performances.

He has also had stints at Derby County and Everton, helping to save the latter from relegation in the 2021-22 season and is reportedly keen on holding talks with Rangers bosses as they search for a successor to Michael Beale.

Hutton suggested Lampard could be a strong contender to take over at Ibrox.

There are that many names that it is a difficult one to call,” he told Football Insider.

Would I like Frank Lampard? He has had experience in the Premier League and the Championship. He did well in that first season with Chelsea when they had the transfer embargo so it could possibly be an interesting one.

“It could be similar to when Steven Gerrard took over. He has that aura about him, people would look up to him, he was one of the best midfielders to play the game so he has got that. He has had difficult times as well.
