Pundit drops 'crazy' Liverpool verdict as Luiz Diaz controversy takes new twist today

Liverpool have been victim of a massive injustice after Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal against Tottenham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Spurs defender Alan Hutton said the VAR officials working the game made a “crazy” error that shouldn’t happen at the highest level of the game.

As shown on Sky Sports (2 October), Diaz had found the back of the net against Spurs but the linesman’s flag had been raised to suggest that the goal was offside, despite replays showing, quite clearly, that the Reds attacker was onside.

The VAR officials did not intervene and the goal was disallowed and Jurgen Klopp’s side went on to lose the match 2-1 as a result of a late own goal from Joel Matip.

The refereeing body PGMOL released a statement after the game confirming their had been significant human error in the decision and confirmed that Diaz was in fact onside.

The Reds made a formal request on Monday to PGMOL to be sent the audio recordings between the match officials.

BBC Sport reported on Tuesday afternoon that the club have now received them from the referees’ body.

Hutton couldn’t believe how badly the situation was handled during the game.

It is crazy,” he told Football Insider.

At the end of the day people make mistakes, that is what it boils down to but that is not good enough at the highest level.

From what I know and can read into it, it has not really been opened up to the discussion and it has just been presumed to be offside when it clearly was not. Unbelievable.

It is a really poor error and these are the situations where this can come back to bite you at the end of the season if you need a point or two and that is the biggest downside to it.

I think they realised they made the wrong decision so I do not understand why they did not just bring it back and give the goal.
