Pundit issues 'massive' claim on Newcastle signing 'big name' in January after confession

Newcastle will struggle to make “top-class” signings in January despite their financial strength.

That’s according to former Leeds stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider ahead of a “massive” January window for the Magpies.

Newcastle sit 19th in the Premier League after 15 games, recording just one win.

Speaking to Sky Sports on 29 November, Eddie Howe admitted he has “one eye on January” as he looks to drag his aside clear of the relegation zone.

Following Newcastle’s Saudi-backed takeover in October, several high-profile players have been linked with moves to the North East.

However, Kenny insists players may still snub Newcastle if their Premier League status is seriously in doubt.

“Money is one thing, but potentially playing Championship football is another,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“You have relegation clauses and I guess that’s an option but players might view that as a loan move.

“I’ve seen lots of players at Barcelona linked with Newcastle. I don’t see that.

“Newcastle would have to pay massive wages and convince a player to move to Newcastle, who might not even be in the Premier League next season.

“That is a really hard sell. I’m sure Newcastle fans aren’t expecting a big name.

“There has to be a realism there, we have to see what happens. I don’t think it will be an easy window.

“One thing is for sure, they have to get four or five players in and I can that.

“The current players just aren’t good enough.”
