Pundit claims there's 'no chance of Phillips signing new contract' at Leeds after development

There’s “no chance” of Kalvin Phillips signing a new Leeds United contract after recent developments.

That’s according to ex-Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the future of the club’s star midfielder.

This site broke the news on 16 September that the Yorkshire giants had opened preliminary negotiations with Phillips over a new long-term deal.

An agreement is not yet in place and there have been suggestions that the relationship between the England international and Marcelo Bielsa is not quite what it could be.

This comes after Bielsa surprisingly substituted a fully fit Phillips at half-time of their recent 1-1 Premier League draw against Brighton.

“Someone like Phillips should only not play if he’s injured or he’s tired,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider. “Otherwise, he plays every minute.

“Somethings not right and they have to get it right. There’s no chance of him signing a new contract at the moment.”

The player subsequently denied talk of a fall-out when he spoke to Amazon Prime ahead of the midweek win against Crystal Palace, a match in which he played the full 90 minutes.

Phillips started but did not complete Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Brentford due to a leg injury sustained shortly after half-time.

His current deal, signed in September 2019 when United were still in the Championship, runs until the summer of 2024.

Phillips’ career has been transformed by Bielsa, who has helped develop him from an inconsistent youngster without a fixed position into one of the outstanding midfield anchormen in English football.

In other news, new Leeds United untouchable is “one hell of a player” who’s “as important as Phillips and Raphinha”.
