Tottenham insider issues 'bleak' Doherty update after Conte snub

Matt Doherty’s chances of “making it” at Tottenham are looking “bleak” after failing to start v Norwich.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Doherty, 29, failed to start against Norwich on Sunday (5 December) despite Emerson Royal missing the game.

Japhet Tanganga started at right wing-back but did make way for the Ireland international with half an hour to play.

This was just his third Premier League outing of the season.

Wenham is disappointed with how Doherty’s Tottenham career has unfolded.

“It’s a bit bleak it’s it?” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He did come on yesterday but it doesn’t look great. Last year it didn’t work out for him.

“From what I’ve read, he’s the first to admit that. Even under Nuno, the guy who got the best out of him at Wolves didn’t select him.

“He actually went and signed Emerson Royal and was starting Tanganga over him before Royal joined.

“Conte has come in and he’s not picking him either. For whatever reason he can’t get a look in.

“He has made a few appearances this season and for me, he hasn’t really convinced.

“That’s a shame because I was quite happy when we signed him. I don’t think he will make it, so to speak.”

Doherty has made 37 appearances since signing for Spurs in the summer of 2020.

He has featured in eight games this season.

In other news, Tottenham are preparing for the “biggest window in their history”, with 10-plus deals in the pipeline.
