West Ham could seal 'brilliant' Phillips signing after confirmed January news - pundit

Nathaniel Phillips has more chance of leaving Liverpool in January than Joe Gomez amid interest from West Ham.

That is the view of former Spurs and England number one Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Phillips, 24, potentially swapping Anfield for the London Stadium.

The Hammers are expected to enter the winter market for a centre-half following injuries to Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma.

An Irons source told Football Insider (29 November) that West Ham are lining up a move for Liverpool’s Phillips.

The Sunday Mirror have reported (5 December p.71) that the Reds will block Joe Gomez from leaving in January amid interest from Aston Villa.

However, this site understands Jurgen Klopp’s side will listen to offers for Phillips, who is behind Gomez in the pecking order at Anfield.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on Phillips potentially joining the Irons, Robinson said:

“Phillips has got more chance of leaving than Gomez has, that’s for sure.

“I still think a deal will be difficult to do though given the injury crisis Liverpool had last season.

“Phillips was brilliant at the end of last season but whether he is of the same level as Zouma and Ogbonna, I would question that.

“It’s an area that Moyes probably need to address though.”

As quoted by Football.London (4 December), David Moyes remained coy when quizzed about potential centre-back signings in January.

He said: “January is far away. We have a game next week before we get to January.”

In other news, a pundit has predicted Declan Rice could sign a new West Ham contract amid a ‘£100m’ claim.
