Man United tipped to sign 24-yr-old 'perfect' Pogba replacement after 'whispers' from Spain - pundit

Frenkie de Jong would be the “perfect” replacement for Paul Pogba at Man United, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 24-year-old would be a “quality signing” as Ralf Rangnick starts his Old Trafford rebuild.

According to El Nacional (5 December), Man United are interested in signing De Jong from cash-strapped Barcelona.

The report claims the Blaugrana will not entertain an offer below £60m for the Netherlands international.

Pogba is out of contract at Man United at the end of the season and is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign sides from January.

The World Cup winner is currently on the treatment table at Old Trafford after picking up an injury last month.

When asked if De Jong would be a good addition, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Absolutely, that would be perfect.

“It’s something that has been whispered about for quite a while with the financial crisis at Barcelona, and Man United are looking to take advantage of that.

“With Paul Pogba likely leaving on a free transfer at the end of the season, maybe to Paris Saint-Germain – De Jong could be that replacement they will need.

“They need to start rebuilding under Rangnick, so if they can get this one over the line it would be a quality signing.”

New United boss Rangnick got off to a winning start against Crystal Palace yesterday (5 December).

The Red Devils sit sixth in the Premier League.
