Pundit can't believe Brendan Rodgers could depart Leicester City amid new 'sack' verdict
Kevin Campbell has claimed Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers should not yet become the next England manager as Gareth Southgate still has “a lot to give” in the role.
The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hailed the 49-year-old’s turnaround at the King Power Stadium after fans and pundits were calling for him to be sacked earlier this season.
According to the Daily Mail (14 December), Southgate will be asked to make a quick decision on his future as England boss after admitting he is considering quitting the post.
This news comes after the Daily Star claimed (12 December) that FA bosses will consider making Rodgers the next Three Lions boss should Southgate decide to move on.
Rodgers was on the brink of the sack at Leicester earlier this season but has since turned the Foxes’ fortunes around and won fans back, winning four of the last five Premier League games.
The Northern Irishman, who has been at Leicester since February 2019 and won the FA Cup in 2021, is under contract at the King Power Stadium until 2025.
Campbell told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think he’d make a really good England manager.
“He’s had to weather the storm at Leicester. Everyone was tipping him to get the sack at the start of the season because it just wasn’t clicking for him.
“The break has come at the wrong time for him and Leicester because they were absolutely flying; winning games and winning comfortably.
“Rodgers would be up there in the running for the job. The football he plays is easy on the eye.
“But I think Gareth Southgate should stay on. He’s got a lot left to give. He’s suited to that international role and I can see England having success at the next Euros.”
