West Ham have 'disrespected' Ben Johnson after new contract talks twist - pundit

Kevin Campbell has claimed Ben Johnson may have been treated unfairly by West Ham as they continue to refuse to meet his contract demands.

The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 22-year-old must be offered the “going rate” after never letting the Irons down with his displays.

West Ham have put a halt on contract talks with Johnson’s representatives after being unable to strike a deal during the past year.

The England Under-21 international is under contract at the London Stadium until June 2024 – and currently earns a reported wage of £20,000-a-week.

Johnson has proven his versatility since breaking through at West Ham – playing left and right-back, as well as in a centre-back berth.

The London-born ace, who has been named the Young Hammer of the Year for the last two campaigns, has made 14 appearances across all competitions this season.

Campbell told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “You tend to find the home-grown players, mostly, don’t get treated with the same respect as these big-money signings.

“That’s why Ben Johnson is holding out.

“He’s come through the ranks, and he’s seeing these signings coming into the club – there’s big money flying around.

“We’re talking first-team contracts. Maybe Johnson isn’t being offered the going rate – and that’s disrespectful.

“He’s very capable, he’s never let West Ham down. Maybe he wants to test the open market. If he’s a free agent, he’ll get that wage.”
