Pundit shares emphatic Harvey Elliott verdict after big-money Liverpool deal signed

Kevin Campbell has claimed Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones must now prove their worth at Liverpool as a number of ageing midfielders reach the end of their shelf life at Anfield.

The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hailed the Merseysiders for their “grooming” of the duo to date.

Liverpool confirmed last week (17 November) that Jones, 21, had signed a new “long-term” deal at the club.

Football Insider revealed earlier on Thursday that the midfielder’s big-money new deal will keep him at Anfield until 2026 and hand him a pay hike on his old £30,000-a-week deal.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Elliott is enjoying a breakthrough season for Jurgen Klopp’s side – playing 22 games and scoring three goals.

Jones has seen his involvement limited by a leg fracture this season but has still managed seven outings across all competitions.

Campbell suggested Liverpool won’t hesitate to spend big money on midfield reinforcements if the youngsters cannot step up in the near future.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think this is the right thing to do for Jones.

“They haven’t put too much on his shoulders so far – but he’s still managed to get experience in the Premier League, Champions League, and the cup competitions.

“But now, somewhere down the line, you’re wanting him and Harvey Elliott to really grow and make those midfield spots their own.

“It’s an old group in that midfield, so it’s up to them to prove they can do it or Liverpool will just go and get new players in who can.

“I think the contract is the right thing, and they’re grooming these two young players in the right way.”
