Sources: Brands '90% likely' to be sacked by Everton after Moshiri reveal

Marcel Brands is increasingly likely to pay the price for the woeful Everton run that has led to a mutinous atmosphere among supporters, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

Manager Rafael Benitez was given the public backing of owner Farhad Moshiri yesterday (2 December) in the wake of fans turning on the club hierarchy following the 4-1 thrashing by Liverpool at Goodison Park.

An Everton source has told Football Insider that transfer guru Brands, 59, is running out of senior figures among the board and management willing to defend his work.

It is said he is now “90 per cent likely” to be dismissed even though he signed a new three-year contract in April.

This comes at a time where there has been a power struggle behind the scenes of the club involving the manager and director of football.

As Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (1 December), Benitez, 61, is his own man and wants to take further control of the club’s recruitment going into the January window.

By contrast, Brands believes he has the mandate to oversee transfers after committing until 2024 in a deal signed only seven months ago.

It is a battle that the Spaniard now appears likely to win after Moshiri went public to insist his fifth manager appointment in five years “needs time”.

Everton started the season brightly after Benitez was able to spend only £1.7million on summer signings as a result of the club having to navigate Premier League profit and sustainability rules.

But they have struggled badly over the last two months and have now slipped to 14th in the Premier League table, just five points above the relegation zone.

Benitez’s team host Arsenal on Monday, when Moshiri is expected to be present, before travelling to Crystal Palace and Chelsea.
