Ex-Fifa referee delivers 'absolute' verdict on Liverpool controversy as Thiago footage emerges

Keith Hackett has insisted Wolves can have no complaints with Liverpool’s late winner during their 1-0 win at Molinuex.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee insisted Wolves lost the game to a better team fair and square.

The hosts had managed to keep free-scoring Liverpool quiet until Divock Origi’s 94th-minute winner, as shown on the BBC’s Match of the Day programme.

Jurgen Klopp’s side launched a counter-attack after winning the ball from former defender Ki Jana-Hoever.

Thiago won the ball and despite protests from Ruben Neves who thought his side deserved a free kick.

Moments later the ball was in the back of the Wolves net after Origi finished off a quick counter-attacking move.

Bruno Lage told the BBC after the game in reference to his side conceding a late goal “these things cannot happen”.

“It was a weak shout for a free kick, absolutely,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Don’t blame the referee. You lost the game to the better side. There was nothing wrong here, move on.

“The player is looking to buy a foul but it was the right decision.”

Origi has now scored four times and provided two assists in just 313 minutes of action across all competitions this term.

In nine appearances this term only three have come as a starter, including two in the Carabao Cup.

The 26-year-old is out of contract at Anfield at the end of the current campaign.
