Pundit can't believe Rangnick earning nearly £10m for luring Haaland to Man United

Kevin Phillips can’t believe Man United interim manager Ralf Rangnick could potentially earn £8.5million if he convinces Erling Haaland to move to Old Trafford.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Sunderland and England striker said the reported contract clause “would take complete focus off the current players and squad.”

According to Bild (1 December), Rangnick has a clause in his United contract which will earn him £8.5m if he can persuade Haaland to join the club next year.

However, as quoted by Metro (3 December), Rangnick has disputed the clause and claimed it is “nonsense”.

A number of Europe’s top clubs have set their sights on signing Borussia Dortmund’s Haaland next year.

The 21-year-old has a £68million release clause in his contract which becomes active next summer.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Rangnick’s reported clause, Phillips said: “Why would you do that?

“That would take complete focus off the work with the current players and the squad. His focus would be on trying to sign that one player.

“Let the manager have a chat with him and then let the powers that be try and convince his representatives.

“Haaland is arguably the best striker in Europe at the moment. It would be some signing.

“Rangnick would earn every penny of that fee if he is the deciding factor in Haaland coming.”

Haaland has scored 15 goals in 12 games in all competitions this season.

He has two-and-a-half years remaining on his contract.
