Tottenham 'desperate' to seal 'marquee signing' after source's unprecedented transfer reveal - pundit

Tottenham “desperately need” to sign a “marquee” centre-half in January after Cristian Romero’s injury, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted Spurs were “naive” in the absence of the 23-year-old against Norwich.

Ben Davies, Davinson Sanchez, and Eric Dier kept a clean sheet despite a shaky display as Tottenham defeated Norwich 3-0 at home yesterday (5 December).

A Spurs source told Football Insider today (6 December) that the club are laying the groundwork for an unprecedented January transfer spree, with Antonio Conte planning multiple signings.

Conte’s priority is to recruit at least one proven centre-back who can slot into the three-man defence he has implemented since his arrival.

Whelan urged the Italian to address Tottenham’s “fragilities” in the winter window.

“I think we saw against Norwich that a bit more quality from them would have made it a closer game,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Those little holes in defence are still very much there and they desperately need to go into the market and get a quality centre-half.

“They have lost a top-class defender already in Romero, who could be out until late February.

“They’ve got to go out and target that marquee signing in that centre-back role, it’s a really crucial position.

“I saw some real naivety at the back yesterday from Tottenham and a better team would have made them pay.

“You can see the fragilities, and now it’s up to Spurs to address them in the window.”

Conte revealed last week that Tottenham defender Romero will be missing until 2022 with a “serious injury”.

The north London club sit fifth in the Premier League.

In other news, 24-year-old is “100 per cent” planning to quit Tottenham in January.
