Newcastle United have a 'problem' with Allan Saint-Maximin after what I saw v Everton - pundit

Allan Saint-Maximin has “struggled” playing an impact role for Newcastle United after his performance in Thursday’s defeat to Everton.

That is the view of former Leeds striker Noel Whelan who, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted Eddie Howe will be “frustrated” with what he has seen from the 25-year-old.

Saint-Maximin has not started for Newcastle since the 1-0 win over Aston Villa in February after suffering injury and illness.

He has come off the bench in three of the Magpies’ last four games, playing 19 minutes in Thursday’s 1-0 defeat.

Whelan suggested coming on as a substitute means Saint-Maximin is struggling to adapt to the pace of games.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I always say it’s hard as a substitute to come off the bench. Some people can do it easier than others.

“With Saint-Maximin, I think the problem with him is he knows that he’s their star player and he tries to do everything by himself. We love the darting runs, we love those powerful runs that he makes.

“But sometimes when you come off the bench and you’re not properly warm, you’ve not got yourself into the game, those touches can be a little bit too heavy. They can run away from you like not long after you’ve started the game.

“Some people can adapt to coming off the bench and getting into a game easier than others. I think he’s struggled because he tries to do too much himself at times. He doesn’t need to.

“Grow into the game if you can. I know there’s not much time with 20 minutes to play but the pace of the game is a lot quicker than when you’re warming up on the sideline.

“I think it will frustrate Eddie Howe but you can’t take away his desire. He wants to change the game, he wants to win the game.

“That is why he tries to do something brilliant on the ball every time he gets it. That’s why he is loved by the fans.”
