Kieran Maguire: Man United could be about to emulate 'sensational' Tottenham move

Man United could follow in Tottenham’s footsteps and knock down Old Trafford to make way for a state-of-the-art new stadium.

So says finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Glazers’ plans to revamp their 76,000-seater home.

The owners have faced staunch criticism in recent years for letting the stadium fall into disrepair, but they now appear intent on renovations.

The Daily Mail reported on Monday (14 March) that one of three options being considered is to demolish Old Trafford entirely.

Spurs’ new multi-function stadium opened its doors in April 2019 and is considered one of the world’s finest sporting venues.

The Red Devils could replicate the Londoners’ strategy and start again from scratch at Old Trafford, claims Maguire.

“United have seen what happened at Spurs,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“They certainly have the land through which it could build an expanded stadium.

“You could also change the footprint to deal with the fact that the stadium is close to a railway line.

“What has happened at Spurs is sensational. United are fully aware of the revenues that are being generated because it has been built from scratch.

“Spurs’ stadium has been future-proofed for a generation because it’s a new-build.

“If you do make adjustments to Old Trafford, it won’t fix the issues that the seats are too close together and there are problems with catering and so on.

United are reported to have hired a chief architect to begin planning for their stadium revamp.

It is unclear where the Red Devils will play matches in the meantime.
