Mohamed Salah: Whelan issues '100 per cent' claim on Liverpool superstar joining bitter rivals

Man City and Man United could “push the boat out” to sign Mohamed Salah if he cannot agree a new deal at Liverpool, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Reds’ bitter rivals could give the 29-year-old his “last big contract in football”.

This site revealed on Saturday (12 March) that Salah wants to stay in the Premier League if he can’t reach an agreement with Liverpool.

According to Fabrizio Romano in The Guardian (11 March), contract talks between the winger and the Merseysiders have stalled after he rejected the club’s latest offer – with no talks taking place since December.

Football Insider revealed last year (25 October 2021) that Salah wants £500,000-a-week in order to pen new terms.

Whelan insisted he has “no doubt” that the 29-year-old would be offered that wage if he were to leave Anfield.

“From the player’s perspective, this could be his last big contract in football,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He’s asking for big money, but if he goes on a free transfer, he will get that wage, 100%. There’s no doubt about that.

“You’re only looking at Man United and Man City in the Premier League, really. I don’t think anyone else would push the boat out.

“They’re the only clubs who could have the capacity to pay that kind of money.

“Let’s not forget, the departure of Paul Pogba will free up a huge amount of money this summer.”

Salah‘s current Liverpool deal expires in 2023, meaning he can pen a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from next January.

The former Chelsea man has netted 28 goals in 35 games this term.
