Everton news: Richarlison must 'man up' after what he did against Newcastle - pundit

Noel Whelan has blasted Everton star Richarlison for his “childish behaviour” in Thursday’s win over Newcastle United.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 24-year-old needs to “man up” after showing his “petulance” against the Magpies.

Richarlison started and played 88 minutes in the 1-0 win, picking up a yellow card for a collision with Dan Burn.

The Brazilian had the joint-fewest touches (30) of any of the 22 players who started the game (WhoScored).

Whelan was hugely unimpressed with the attacker’s attitude and suggested he needs to “focus” more.

“He’s got a temperament and a childish behaviour about him at times,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“Petulance, I think is what you’d call it. Somebody as strong as he is, and you can see that with his body type, he goes down far too easily. He whinges too much which, in my opinion, takes away something from his game.

“He loses focus. I think if he just manned up a little bit. That’s the term, man up to be that centre-forward, that striker, that strong person who holds the ball, can take a knock and get back up.

“Nobody wants to see a player rolling around on the floor. No one wants to see somebody going down too easily. The Everton fans need people to stand up right now like a brick wall. To look after that ball and protect themselves.

“Not throw their arms around like in the playground. It’s not nice to see, especially from somebody with so much talent. I think it takes away his game at times.

“He wants to do too much of that, rather than showing them and us how good a football player he is.”

In other news, pundit stunned by what he has seen from another Everton star.
