Liverpool news: Agbonlahor issues 'very unfair' Luis Diaz claim after reveal in recent hours

It would be “very unfair” on the rest of the Premier League if Liverpool were allowed to use five substitutes, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker insisted the Premier League should keep three substitutes and there is no reason to change.

As quoted by the Telegraph on Friday (18 March), Jurgen Klopp reiterated his calls for more substitutes after Trent Alexander-Arnold was ruled out for “weeks” with a hamstring injury.

Klopp suggested Alexander-Arnold’s setback is a direct result of his side’s schedule with the 2-0 win over Arsenal the 12th game they had played in 38 days since the winter break.

The Daily Mail reported on Monday (11 March) that the German may get his wish as clubs are set to vote on reintroducing five substitutes at the end of the season.

It was brought in as a temporary measure when the Premier League resumed after the coronavirus lockdown in June 2020 but was scrapped last season while all other major leagues made it permanent.

Asked for his verdict on five substitutes being reintroduced, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I think it would be very unfair.

“Liverpool could bring off Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz. That’s very unfair.

“It’s not something that I would be happy with. The clubs in the bottom half, it would be a disadvantage for them.

“It’s been three subs since the Premier League started, why change it?”

Liverpool are able to use five substitutes in the Champions League and both domestic cup competitions.

In their most recent Champions League games – the 1-0 loss to Inter Milan in the round of 16 second leg – Klopp only replaced three players during the 90 minutes.

In other news, an ‘amazing’ Liverpool claim has been issued after a ‘frankly ridiculous’ development.
