Medical expert: Newcastle could let Jamal Lewis go as real reason for Germany trip revealed

Jamal Lewis’ persistent injury problems may mean he exits Newcastle United this summer.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Lewis, 24, has not played since mid-December and was not included in the Magpies’ most recent 25-man Premier League squad.

The left-back, who signed from Norwich City in September 2020, has struggled with a groin issue since early on in his Newcastle career.

Per Chronicle Live last Wednesday (9 March), Eddie Howe revealed that Lewis “is in Germany getting assessed and looked at by a groin specialist.”

The Northern Irishman is under contract at St. James’ Park until 2025.

Dinnery argues that Lewis’ future on Tyneside is far from certain and may be contingent on the club’s recruitment in the summer.

“Jamal Lewis is held in fairly high regard,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“Eddie Howe spoke highly of him, but the concern was that he just hasn’t been able to keep himself fit.

“He has been managing this groin issue now for 13 or 14 months. We’ve never really seen a fully fit Jamal Lewis, or at least not for a long, long time.

“The fact that he has gone to Germany to try and remedy that problem, you hope that this will fix it.

“The hope is that they can get him ready for pre-season. Hopefully, he can show more what he’s capable of.

“Whether that’s at Newcastle or elsewhere, time will tell. That will depend on recruitment. There are lots of players ahead of him in the pecking order.”

Lewis has featured just six times this season.

Newcastle signed fellow left-back Matt Targett on loan from Aston Villa in January and have the option to make the deal permanent.
