Luke Ayling to leave Leeds United - 'he won't get a new contract', says pundit

Luke Ayling will depart Leeds United upon the expiration of his contract.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie claimed that Daniel Farke dropping the full-back suggested he was not in the boss’ future plans.

Ayling, 32, started the opening seven games in the Championship this season but has since played just 38 minutes in the last eight games.

Ayling’s Elland Road contract is set to expire at the end of the season while Archie Gray and Jamie Shackleton have both emerged as preferred right-back options this season.

McAvennie urged the Englishman to perform at his best in his potential last months in Yorkshire to make him more attractive to clubs who could secure him as a free agent.

“I would think he definitely goes at the end of the season,” he told Football Insider.

“If he’s getting dropped from the team, it means Farke is looking ahead.

“Farke would have had a chat with him telling him he won’t be getting a new contract but I still want you to do things while you’re here.

“He’ll come in and do it and I think the boy’s honest enough to come in and do a job.

“He’s 32 so he can still go off and pick up a good living at another club but whenever he comes into the side he has to do well so someone will pick him up.

“You’d get him for practically nothing when his contract’s up.”
