Newcastle United transfer news: Five 'superstars' set to sign - pundit says 'it's happening'

Newcastle United will boost their squad with the signings of five “superstars” this summer.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ transfer plans.

Newcastle flexed their new financial muscles in January, spending near £100million on five new signings.

The most expensive of which was Lyon’s Bruno Guimaraes, 24, who joined for an initial £33million.

McAvennie expects Eddie Howe’s side will make similar signings in the summer with the club on course for Premier League survival.

“The season’s over, they aren’t going to get relegated,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I’m interested to see what they do in the summer. Some big, big players are going to come in.

“There isn’t much of a squad there, as we saw against Everton, so they need to strengthen their options.

“But they aren’t just going to sign average players to beef out the squad, they will be top, top players.

“I think Newcastle can fly up the table towards Europe next season because that squad will be so different.

“I think we will see more signings like Bruno Guimaraes instead of Dan Burn.

“Not to say Burn has been bad, he’s been brilliant. But Newcastle will go for superstars now they are safe.

“If they get four or five of them, which will probably happen, who knows what they can do next season.”

Newcastle are next in action after the international break against Tottenham on 3 April.

The Magpies are unbeaten during their two previous visits to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
