Eddie Howe: Newcastle United will be challenging Liverpool and Man City for title in 'two years' - pundit

Newcastle United will be challenging for the Premier League title within the next “two to three years”.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ upcoming summer transfer window.

Newcastle have won six of their last nine games under Eddie Howe, pushing the club clear of the relegation zone.

McAvennie has predicted a meteoric rise for the club but suggested Howe won’t be the man to lead Newcastle long-term.

“Newcastle will have money to spend in the summer and they will bring some big players in,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“They will be challenging for Europe next season, no doubt about it.

“I think it will be two or three years to get up there challenging for the title.

“You get some managers who can come in and change the whole structure of the club in a short space of time.

“Eddie Howe is a good manager, is he the guy to do that? Maybe not, he hasn’t done it before.

“He has that chance though, that’s the great thing. He might be a top manager at this level when he has the money to spend, you just don’t know.

“He seems like a nice guy, he’s a fan favourite already. I hope he does well. If he doesn’t he will know about it pretty quickly.

“Newcastle will be able to attract some top managers in a few year’s time and I honestly think they will be up there with Man City and Liverpool in no time.”

Newcastle are next in action after the international break against Tottenham on 3 April.

The Magpies are unbeaten during their two previous visits to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
