Georgios Giakoumakis: Celtic idol compares striker to Rangers legend after what he saw this week

Frank McAvennie has compared Georgios Giakoumakis’ to Rangers legend Ally McCoist after his latest flurry of goals for Celtic.

The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, has been blown away by the in-form attacker.

Giakoumakis, 27, bagged a brace as Celtic beat Dundee United 3-0 in the Scottish Cup on Monday (14 March).

This took his tally of Hoops goals to nine in 21 outings since joining the club in the summer of 2021.

The Greece international has stepped up in 2022 after top-scorer Kyogo Furuhashi was sidelined with a hamstring problem.

McAvennie insists Giakoumakis has a striker’s instinct that can’t be taught, just like McCoist.

“I really like the boy, he had a tough start here with injuries and not playing but he’s been so good,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“You have to take your chance when you are given it and because we have three solid strikers, you score or you’re out.

“So Kyogo got injured and we signed Maeda, so you would think he would be playing every game.

“But Giakoumakis has played plenty as well and I’ve been really impressed.

“Some players take longer to adapt to Scottish football as well, so that might be a factor.

“He has brilliant striker’s instincts that you just can’t teach. Ally McCoist used to do it all the time.

“You follow up the shot and if the keeper drops it you put it into an open net. That’s what he did against Dundee United.

“Giakoumakis has that that in bundles. I’m delighted, he’s a brilliant striker.”
