Sources: Plymouth Argyle boss Steven Schumacher rejects Swansea City job

Plymouth Argyle boss Steven Schumacher has rejected the Swansea manager’s job, sources have told Football Insider.

Swansea have targeted the 39-year-old as potential replacement for Southampton-bound Russell Martin.

Schumacher has now ruled himself out of the running to take over at Swansea to stay at Plymouth as they prepare for first season back in the Championship

The former Everton man took over from Ryan Lowe midway through the 2021-22 season as Argyle just missed out on the play-offs.

He achieved even more success last season as he guided his team promotion to the Championship.

Schumacher, 39, is regarded as one of the best young coaches in the country after impressing at Argyle and was a top contender for the Swans post.

Swansea are not the only Championship club who have been interested in attaining Schumacher’s services as manager, with the coach also having been approached by Huddersfield last season.

Schumacher was in the frame for the vacant manager’s job at Huddersfield Town, sources had told Football Insider.

Huddersfield were searching for a new manager following the sacking of Danny Schofield after just one win from his nine games in charge at the start of last season.

Schumacher had a brief spell as caretaker boss of Southport in 2017 before a year as first-team coach at Bury in 2018-19.

He then went on to join Plymouth as assistant manager and was promoted upon Lowe’s departure to Preston North End.

With the new season fast approaching,  Swansea will need to explore other managerial targets before the start of the campaign following the rejection by Schumacher.
