Sources: Romelu Lukaku not expected to play for Chelsea again after talks update

Romelu Lukaku is not expected to return to Chelsea, sources have told Football Insider.

Inter Milan are continuing talks over a potential transfer for Lukaku following his loan at the club.

The 30-year-old spent the 2022-23 campaign on loan at Inter despite quitting the Italian club to join the Blues in 2021.

The striker is now believed to be keen on a permanent return to his former club after his temporary spell back at the San Siro last term.

Last month (14 June), Football Insider revealed that the Belgium international wants to quit the Stamford Bridge club this summer.

Lukaku’s current contract with the London club runs until 2026 after he put pen to paper on a five-year deal in 2021.

During his spell back at the San Siro, the forward scored 14 goals in 37 appearances, including three in a Champions League campaign that saw them reach the final, a game he started on the bench.

Despite returning to Chelsea following the expiration of his loan, Lukaku is one of the fringe players that has been told not to show up to training until Monday (17 July), having been originally due back at Cobham this week.

Hakim Ziyech and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are among the players whose futures are up in the air and have also been told to stay away from training until next week.

Conversations are believed ongoing over the futures of the out of favour trio.
