Sources: Leeds United now turn attention to signing Coventry City star Hamer

Leeds United are monitoring the situation of Coventry City star Gus Hamer, sources have told Football Insider.

The Whites are in the market for a new midfielder in the final month of the summer window after something of an exodus following relegation to the Championship.

Hamer, 26, has emerged as a possible target after his great form for beaten playoff finalists Coventry last season.

The defensive midfielder grabbed an equaliser at Wembley as the Sky Blues went down on penalties against Luton Town after a 1-1 draw.

Hamer is entering the final year of his contract at the CBS Arena, which has put potential suitors on red alert.

Talks have been held over a potential new deal after his exemplary performances in the 2022-23 campaign – but it is believed an agreement is still some way away.

The former Feyenoord star managed 11 goals and 10 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions last term.

He has now racked up 130 games across three seasons at Coventry since arriving in England in July 2020.

The Brazil-born former Netherlands youth international also managed 50 games in the Eredivisie for PEC Zwolle and Feyenoord.

Leeds have lost multiple midfielders amid nine total exits so far this summer.

Marc Roca and Brenden Aaronson have departed on loan, Weston McKennie has returned to Juventus after the end of his loan at Elland Road – and Adam Forshaw has seen his contract expire.

Daniel Farke’s side kick off their season against Cardiff on Sunday (6 August), when Coventry are also in action against Leicester.

In other news, multiple Premier League clubs move for Leeds United star.
