Sources: Man City make Kyle Walker U-turn

Man City are desperately trying to convince Kyle Walker to stay at the club amid continued interest from Bayern Munich, sources have told Football Insider.

The German giants have been in talks with City and the 33-year-old over a potential switch for months – with manager Thomas Tuchel a big fan of his talents.

Man City have changed their stance over letting Walker depart this summer, with key duo Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez already quitting since the end of last season.

The treble-winners were initially set to offer the England international a short-term extension to his contract, which is due to expire in June 2024.

Doubts over Walker’s future also emerged back in April when Guardiola claimed Walker “cannot play” in his new-look inverted system.

However, with Bayern prepared to table a long-term deal for the defender – City are set to pull out all the stops to keep Walker at the club.

As quoted by Reuters (25 July), manager Pep Guardiola acknowledged he will have to “fight” to keep the “incredibly important” right-back at the Etihad Stadium.

Walker made 39 appearances across all competitions for Man City in a historic 2022-23 campaign which saw them win the treble.

However, Guardiola dropped the former Tottenham star for the Champions League final against Inter Milan in June.

That is despite his stellar performances in the two-legged semi-final win over Real Madrid.

Walker has now won five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups and one Champions League with Man City.
