Sources: Liverpool open Adrian talks

Liverpool have opened new contract talks with Adrian San Miguel as they consider their goalkeeping options ahead of next season, sources have told Football Insider.

The Spaniard’s current deal expires this summer and it had been widely expected that he would depart on a free transfer after four seasons at Anfield.

However, his name was not included in a club statement released on Wednesday confirming the imminent exits of Roberto Firmino, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita as free agents.

And Football Insider understands that it remains possible that Adrian’s stay on Merseyside could be extended.

Discussions have begun over a potential new contract for the 36-year-old.

Liverpool are continuing to assess their options ahead of a summer that could see significant changes to their goalkeeping department.

Second-choice shot-stopper Caoimhin Kelleher is attracting interest from several Premier League clubs and could leave in pursuit of regular minutes.

Adrian, too, could choose to move on in order to play more frequently in the final years of his career after managing just two appearances across the last two seasons.

As such, the Reds are targeting potential alternatives, with Hannover’s Ron-Robert Zieler on their shortlist, as Football Insider revealed earlier this month.

Adrian signed for Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer of 2019 after six seasons with Premier League rivals West Ham United.

He was quickly thrown into the spotlight following his move, with first choice Alisson Becker suffering a muscle injury during the opening league game of the season.

The Spaniard went on to make 11 top-flight appearances as the Reds won the league that season, and was also the star of a penalty shootout victory over Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup.

But his involvement has diminished in each subsequent campaign, with Kelleher having edged him out as the back-up to Alisson.
