Sources: Liverpool make fast move to sign Mac Allister - also working on second marquee signing

Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has emerged as a key target for Liverpool and they have already made behind-the-scenes moves to make him their first summer signing, sources have told Football Insider.

But the Reds remain wary of the strong competition they are likely to face from a number of their Premier League rivals in the race for the World Cup-winning Argentine’s signature.

With his midfield having fallen short of its usual high standards this season, Jurgen Klopp is plotting an overhaul in the centre of the park in the coming transfer window.

The need for additions in that position has also been exacerbated by the news that James Milner will join Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in departing the club on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Football Insider has learned that Liverpool are aiming to move quickly to address this problem, having made early contact with Mac Allister‘s representatives over a potential swoop.

And it is hoped this proactive approach can help them steal a march on the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City, who have also been credited with an interest in the 24-year-old.

Considered an ideal fit for Klopp’s brand of football, Mac Allister’s Premier League experience is also thought to particularly appeal to Liverpool as they look to add players who can make the sort of instant impact that will quickly return them to challenging for top honours next term.

It is for similar reasons that Liverpool will push hard to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea this summer should he reject the offer of a new contract at Stamford Bridge.

The Reds also hold an interest in Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch.

However, it remains to be seen if the German champions will sanction a departure, or if alternative options are ultimately preferred.
