Sources: Coleman awaits injury news with Everton future in the balance

Seamus Coleman faces a nervous wait to learn the true extent of a knee injury that may have brought an end to his Everton career, sources have told Football Insider.

The Irishman was stretchered off in the first half of the Toffees’ 1-1 draw with Premier League relegation rivals Leicester City on Monday evening after going down under a challenge from Boubakary Soumare.

Sean Dyche later said of the blow: “We’re waiting on news about Seamus. It doesn’t look great but we’re waiting on the clarity on that.”

“The medics are thinking it’s probably going to be more serious than not.”

Coleman is certain to miss the remainder of this season but Football Insider has learned that he faces a wait to discover exactly how much longer he will be sidelined.

Everton’s medical staff plan to allow swelling on the defender’s knee to subside before undertaking a scan that will give a clearer picture of the damage.

And that examination has taken on even greater significance in light of Coleman’s precarious contract situation at the club.

The Republic of Ireland international’s current deal expires at the end of the season and a decision had yet to be made on whether his 14-year stint at Goodison Park would be extended.

In the event of a more minor injury having been sustained, it is possible that Everton could still choose to offer a fresh deal to their longest-serving player in anticipation of him playing a role next season.

However, serious ligament damage would severely limit any involvement in the 2023/24 campaign and essentially end hopes of a new contract.

That would make Coleman’s 409th appearance for the Merseyside club at the King Power Stadium his last.

In other news, Everton are plotting a shock move to sign son of club legend.
