Sources: Jurgen Klopp to land extended Liverpool ban - he pays price for poor disciplinary record

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is now set to land an extended touchline ban for his comments regarding referee Paul Tierney following Sunday’s dramatic win over Tottenham, sources have told Football Insider.

The German is expected to be charged by the Football Association under rule E3, which states that managers are not permitted to “imply bias and/or attack the integrity of the referee”.

And Football Insider understands his poor previous disciplinary is likely to count against him in any hearing, resulting in a lengthy ban from the sidelines.

Klopp hit out at Tierney after being shown a yellow card for aggressively celebrating Diogo Jota’s injury-time winner in the face of fourth official John Brooks.

He told Sky Sports: “We have our history with Tierney. I really don’t know what he has against us. He has said there is no problems, but that cannot be true.

“How he looks at me, I don’t understand it. In England nobody has to clarify these situations, it’s really tricky and hard to understand.

“What he said to me when he gave me the yellow card is not OK. I will not say anything. The refs don’t say what is said, so I don’t.”

The PGMOL later released a statement dismissing Klopp’s claims that Tierney had made any inappropriate comments while booking him, and the audio of that exchange is set to be used as evidence by the FA.

Klopp has already served a one-match touchline ban this season after being sent off for remonstrating with assistant referee Gary Beswick during an October victory over Manchester City.

The Reds boss was initially only fined before a successful FA appeal ensured he missed a 3-1 win over Southampton the following month.

And that was not the first time he has landed in hot water with English football’s governing body as a result of his comments about officials.

He had previously clashed with Tierney for failing to send off Harry Kane during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham in December 2021, telling him at full-time: “I have no problems with any referees. Only you.”

In other news, Liverpool backed to agree the signing of a ‘£40m’ Henderson replacement.
